Temporary, Contract or Permanent: Choosing the Right Hire

The question is rarely “can we afford a permanent hire” — it is “what kind of uncertainty are we managing”.

Temporary staffing

Best for known, bounded demand: seasonal peaks, cover for leave, a backlog with a clear end. You pay a premium per hour in exchange for the ability to stop.

Contract and interim

Best for specialist work with a defined deliverable, or leadership cover during a transition. You are buying expertise you do not need permanently, and the day rate reflects that.

Permanent

Best when the work is continuous and accumulating institutional knowledge matters. The real cost is not the salary — it is the three to six months before someone is fully productive, which you pay whether they stay or not.

The hidden cost of choosing wrong

  • Permanent hire for temporary demand: redundancy cost and morale damage
  • Temporary cover for permanent work: constant re-training and knowledge loss
  • Contractor for core capability: dependency on someone with no obligation to stay
